Police Car

Owen can spot a police car, fire truck and ambulance from a mile away. Sometimes we will just be driving and he will yell out "Police Car". It often takes me a few seconds to find it. Fortunately it is not behind me with its lights on!

I was putting Owen to bed tonight and he told me this story:
Owen: Momma, I saw a police car today.
Mommy: "You did? Where?
Owen: I was in the car with Daddy. The other car was going too fast. But the police car caught him. We weren't going too fast.
Mommy: That's good!
Owen: Ya, I asked Daddy why the police car was stopped and Daddy told me what happened.
Mommy: What happened?
Owen: The police car caught the man that was going too fast. We weren't going very fast.

Love that he told me twice that they weren't going too fast! He made sure I knew that!

No secrets and the great escape!

Owen always has a story to tell and there is always someone around to listen. From telling every one in his path that he went pee and poop in the potty to telling someone this morning that he ate fruit snacks in the car. There will be no secrets with him!
We love that he is friendly, chatty and super sweet.

On a different note, last weekend Owen had trouble napping. He did not want to lay down on Saturday. We walked out of his room while he was throwing a fit and figured he would tire soon. I left to go to a cycling class and when Clint went to get Owen up he had a big red spot on his nose. Owen told Clint he got it from "trying to get out of bed". Saturday night, Owen was tired enough that he actually fell asleep while Clint was reading books to him before going to bed. Sunday nap time rolled around and Owen threw the same fit as Saturday. Clint and I were downstairs cleaning up and playing with Avery when we heard some loud thumps. We could hear Owen yelling for us, but the yells sounded louder than normal. Sure enough, he had climbed out of his crib and was by his door. He sat quietly with Clint for a few minutes, but then wanted to play. I tried to lay down with him in our bed, but that didn't work out either. Again, Sunday night he was very tired and ready to go to bed. Once the kids were asleep, we immediately started shopping for mattresses. We already have the conversion kit for Owen crib to turn it into a full bed, we just need the mattress and sheet set.
Around 6am on Monday morning we heard "Mommy!" followed by three knocks. That was Owen, inside his room, calling for me and knocking on his door. He had once again climbed out. Clint ordered a mattress set and it should be here within a couple of weeks. Since I had the day off on Monday for President's day, I took some time to lower Owen's crib mattress right down to the floor. That seems to have bought us some time!

The security of both of our kids being in cribs is gone! We hope Owen will like his big boy bed!

Happy Valentine's day!

Our little man Owen caught on to Valentine's day VERY quickly. This morning we told him it was Valentine's Day and he immediately started wishing everyone he saw a Happy Valentine's Day. He told his teachers at school that Mommy and Tessa (a girl that USED to be in his class) were his Valentines.
I just pulled dinner out of the over (albeit a few minutes too late apparently) and am waiting for all my Valentines (Daddy, Owen and Avery) to get home. Here's dinner:

I also snapped a quick picture of the last two Valentines that the kids have to deliver tonight to our neighbor friends. Daddy and I put these together last week. Owen told us last night that he was going to give lollipops to his friends at school...so it was a good thing they were designed into his Valentine cards!!!

I will try to get a picture of the kids when they get home from school. They were both dressed in Red this morning and looked very festive going to school. Depending on the day they had...they may not be wearing the same clothes when they get home!

Our little negotiator

We started a small toy bucket that comes out when Owen goes pooh on the potty. He gets to pick one thing out of it. There is everything from crayons to chocolate, small puzzles to a small book in there. This little incentive backfired on us about 10 days ago. Owen started wanting to go to the potty to go pooh ALL THE TIME! He would throw a fit if we told him he had just gone and that he was fine. When he did sit on the potty, he'd strain, push, grunt, hold his breath, turn red in the face and finally stand up and say he went. Sure enough there would be something in the potty. At his request, out came the toy bucket. Then one day last week, school called and said Owen had a deep dark rash on his face and it had spread to his neck and back. Mommy was out of town for work, so Daddy went to pick him up and take him to see Dr. Falik. Owen was diagnosed with having Petechia. Basically, he was bursting small blood vessels under the skin while straining on the potty.

SO...we had to change our tactic a little bit. Now, the toy bucket can only come out once in the morning and once in the evening. If he does go pooh on the potty another time, we have promised Owen that he can have a Skittle. The other night, Owen had chosen his toy from the bucket as a reward and then proceeded to go pooh again later in the evening. Here was the conversation between Owen and Daddy:

Daddy: Yeah Owen! I am so proud of you for going poopy on the potty!
Owen: Yeah Owen! I want something from the toy bucket.
Daddy: No, buddy. You already got something from the toy bucket tonight. I can get you a Skittle.
Owen: One Skittle?
Daddy: Yes, one Skittle. What color do you want?
Owen: I want two Skittles.
Daddy: No, I am just going to get you one Skittle. What color?
Owen: I want three Skittles.
Daddy: No, just one.
Owen: OK, just one, but I get to pick it out.
Daddy: OK (with a smile).

Aim high, settle for a bonus.

"Who's your Daddy?"

Owen: Mommy, who's your Daddy?"
Mommy: Pappy is my Daddy.
Owen: No, Pappy is my grandpa
Mommy: That's right! Who's your grandma?
Owen: Gram is my grandma and Nonnie is my grandma.
Mommy: That's right!
Owen: And Pop is my grandpa, just like Pappy.
Mommy: That's right!
Owen: Mommy, who is your brother?
Mommy: Uncle Jeff is my brother.
Owen: And he is my uncle?
Mommy: Yep, that's right.
Owen: I love all of them.
Mommy: Aw....that's sweet. They love you too.

Avery - 9 months

Avery went for her nine month check-up this morning. We were worried that it was going to turn into a sick appointment since she is still tugging at her ears, coughing and congested. But, she got a clean bill of health...with the exception of a small cold and perhaps some teething.
Avery weighed 21 pounds, 12 ounces which puts her in the 95th percentile for weight. She is 28 inches long which puts her in the 45th percentile for height. That confirms our analysis that we have a short/fat baby! Her head measured in the 95th...so she has a big head like her brother!
Picture to follow.

"Can I have a daughter?"

Owen: Daddy, who is your daughter?
Daddy: Avery is my daughter.
Owen: Am I your other daughter?
Daddy: No, you are my son.
Owen: Who is your daughter, Mommy?
Mommy: Avery is my daughter.
Owen: And I am your son?
Mommy: Yes.
Owen: Can I have a daughter?
Daddy: No, not for awhile.
Owen: When you are done with your daughter, can I have one?
Daddy: In about 30 years or so, you can have a daughter.
Owen: I will have one with Mommy and Daddy and Nashers. (BIG smile)
Daddy: OK (?!??!)

Owen is always trying to figure stuff out. He has been into family relationships lately. He wants to know how everyone is related. It is fun to try and explain it to him and amazing that he remembers it all.

Potty Training 1.0

So, I think it is safe to blog about this topic now. We have been officially potty training Owen for 28 days and we are happy to report four accident free days in a row with both pooh and pee going in the potty! Not to mention, Owen is now asking to go potty (whereas before we had to tell him and/or take him (kicking and screaming sometimes) to go). Another major milestone!!!
He loves to keep his Thomas and Sesame Street big boy undies clean and dry. And most of all...he loves for everyone to be SO PROUD of him!

We're not ashamed to say that we have used some bribes. Sticker charts were a hit at first. As that died off, we reverted to M&Ms or Skittles. And then two weekends ago, we told him he could have a Thomas train if he went pooh in the potty. That night he did it! We learned a valuable lesson too...have the prize in the house if it is promised! It is VERY hard to explain to a two year old that we have to go to the store in the morning to get it. Oops. I think we are forgiven now though.

It is nice to only have one in diapers. :)

"And then you make a goal, mommy?"

At dinner tonight, I was explaining to Clint a "garnishing tool" that was given to me at the grocery store today. It is plastic and has a tab on it that you use 'score' the peel on a fruit to make it easier to peel. When I made that statement, Owen said "And then you make a goal, mommy?". It took me awhile...but I finally figured out that he thought when I said "score" that I was talking about "scoring a goal".
Another fine example of how confusing and complicated our English language can be!

"You figure it out"

Owen's vocabulary is growing so fast! And...he can put spout out some great sentences. Here was a conversation I had with him tonight while he was in the bath playing with a little bottle of bubbles that he got in a goody bag at school around Christmas time:

Owen: "Mommy, do these bubbles have a Santa on top?"
Mommy: "Yes, they do."
Owen: "Santa brought me trains. He slept at my house."
Mommy: "Santa did bring you trains, but he did not sleep at your house. He is too busy on Christmas Eve to sleep."
Owen: "He didn't sleep at my house. He didn't go nightnights."
Mommy: "That's right, he didn't go nightnights."
Owen: "Mommy, I can't open this."
Mommy: "Oh...do you want to open it so we can blow bubbles?"
Owen: "Ya. I want to blow bubbles. But I can't open it.
Mommy: "Can I help you open it?"
Owen: "Ya...here...you figure it out."

Eight Months old!

Avery turned eight months old last Friday. As usual...we can't believe how fast time is going.
Here are some of the things she is doing:

- Sits unsupported
- Gets up on all fours, but only has the reverse gear mastered
- Can get into a seated position from all fours
- Loves to try and pull up on anyone/thing next to her (mommy, daddy, Owen, Nash, etc.)
- Naps twice a day for 1-1.5 hours
- Sleeps 7pm to 7am
- Drinks four 6-oz bottles
- Eats 8oz of food (4oz of fruit and 4oz of veg)
- Says "da da da da" all the time!
- Blows raspberries
- Sleeps un-swaddled (as of December 21st!)

She is such a sweet little thing though (well...not so little). Avery weighs 21lbs 4oz and her doctor calls her a FOOD LOVER!!!

McMillan/Truman visit

Some of Mommy's family came down from DC last week. We were all delighted to have Aunt Sharon, Uncle Dan, cousin Sarah and her daughter Sophie come see us.

It was Christmas all over again! We exchanged gifts, played, ate some lunch and had a nice visit, which included the viewing of Aunt Sharon and Uncle Dan's photo slideshow from their 45th wedding anniversary party.

Snuggle bug

Avery loves to snuggle and be held. If it is close to nap or bed time, she will often lay her head down on our shoulders and just relax. She is so sweet!

Sadly....she got sick last week. She had been coughing some at night and had a runny nose. Then by the end of the week, she wasn't finishing her bottles and she was tugging at her ear when she drank. Mommy took her to the doctor right before they closed for the New Year's holiday. Turns out she had a case of RSV which then turned into brochiolitis and an ear infection. Breathing treatments through the weekend helped the former and antibiotics are helping the latter.
Other than the coughing, runny nose and ear tugging...you would never know she was sick. She doesn't complain at all!

More Christmas pictures

We had a wonderful visit with Nonnie and Pop at Christmas. We enjoyed playing with all the new toys from Santa, family and friends. We ate great food and enjoyed each other's company. The visit went by too fast, as always.

Christmas 2011

We also had a fantastic Christmas day. Owen was completely thrilled with his train table and tracks. And he loved opening his presents. He grasped the concept VERY quickly. It was a lot of fun seeing him discover what Santa brought him and open all his gifts from family and friends.
We had a nice phone conversation with Gram and Pappy in the morning. And then Nonnie and Pop flew in from Texas to spend the rest of the day with us.

Christmas Eve 2011

We had a wonderful Christmas Eve this year. We hung out around the house and just enjoyed our family. We snapped some pictures during the day and read "Twas the Night before Christmas" all together before bed time. Mom and Dad enjoyed a nice dinner (steak and deviled crabs) after the kids went to sleep and then "played" Santa. We stuffed all the stockings and assembled Owen's new train table and tracks.

Santa - Fire Truck - 2011

Santa came by our house on a fire truck again this year. Owen had some interesting conversations with us after we told him that Santa was going to come by our house.

Owen: I don't like Santa
Mommy: You don't? Why not?
Owen: I don't know.

A few minutes later....

Owen: Santa is my friend. He brings me presents.
Mommy: He does bring you presents. You are right.
Owen: I love Santa.

Santa 2011

Owen was not a fan of Santa this year. Somehow he managed to smile...but his eyes are filled with tears. Poor guy.

More pics from Thanksgiving!

Here are some more pictures from Thanksgiving weekend. It was Daddy's birthday too! So we celebrated with his favorite - Red Velvet cake. Owen REALLY wanted to help Daddy blow out the candles. Thanks again to Uncle Jeff and Aunt Karine for taking pictures during their visit!!! We need to get better about remembering to take our camera out!

Avery's first Thanksgiving dinner! She had pumpkin, green beans, pears, mango and peach. (Same as what she has most days....but I was certain to make sure she had pumpkin and beans for that meal) :)

Thanksgiving

For Thanksgiving this year Uncle Jeff and Aunt Karine drove down from Montreal and Gram and Pappy drove up from Pinehurst to spend time with us. It was a great visit!
Jeff and Karine remembered to take lots of pictures and shared them with us before departing. Thanks guys! Great shots and memories!

Rainbow!

Our neighbor across the street took this picture this morning. Our house is on the left. Dark clouds, but beautiful rainbow!
